Extended Gateways & Modems
Gateways and modems are system components that provide access to field device and network data by performing protocol conversion and exposing devices to configuration and diagnostic tools. They enable software on computers or handhelds to communicate directly with field instrumentation without redesigning the core network, making them practical building blocks for commissioning, maintenance, and asset visibility.
A modem is generally a point-to-point interface that converts a device protocol to a local connection format (for example, HART/USB or FF/Bluetooth) for use with a handheld configurator or computer. A gateway provides a parallel network access point - connecting the Ethernet port of a computer to any fieldbus device in the network - so device configuration software or a standard web browser can control access.
Beyond connectivity, gateways add operational value through status and health monitoring. Network and device status can be observed via web tools, and concise device diagnosis aligned to NAMUR NE 107 standards supports consistent interpretation of abnormal conditions. Remote monitoring and maintenance via browser access reduces the operational cost of routine checks and accelerates response to developing faults.
Benefits include quick and easy commissioning, simplified connection to devices in the field, and improved visibility into segment/device health without intrusive intervention. When used as an access layer for established configuration environments (e.g., FieldCare), they support repeatable workflows while keeping network access organized and discoverable.
Typical applications include commissioning of HART and fieldbus instruments, troubleshooting segments during outages, providing temporary diagnostic access during turnarounds, and enabling remote monitoring of distributed skids or packaged units. They are also effective for extending device configuration access to locations where direct physical connection is difficult or where a single entry point is preferred for multiple devices.
