WirelessHART solutions provide a flexible method for integrating additional measuring points into monitoring systems without extensive new cabling. They are particularly effective where measurement needs expand over time, where assets are moving or rotating, or where conventional wiring is costly, disruptive, or impractical - while still maintaining structured access to device data.

WirelessHART networks are self-organizing, which reduces setup and commissioning time and supports environments subject to regular expansion (e.g., well heads) or applications involving moving machinery. An adapter-based approach enables WirelessHART communication to be added quickly to existing 4–20 mA devices, extending digital visibility without replacing installed instrumentation.

A typical architecture uses WirelessHART adapters to transmit 4–20 mA/HART signals from connected field devices to a WirelessHART gateway (“Fieldgate”). Adapters may be powered by battery packs or power supplies, enabling deployment in both hazardous and non-hazardous areas. Gateways manage network connectivity/security and convert and store wireless device data in formats suitable for host systems.

Host integration is commonly achieved through Ethernet (and, depending on gateway, additional interfaces) to connect to SCADA tools and plant asset management systems. This enables condition monitoring, inventory and tank/silo monitoring, and process optimization use cases with lower installation effort compared with running new homeruns or extending marshalling capacity.

Typical applications include incremental monitoring on operating plants, temporary measurements during turnarounds, rotating equipment monitoring, remote or hard-to-access assets, and distributed inventory points where additional wiring would be a barrier to visibility. WirelessHART’s expansion-friendly behavior supports scalable deployment strategies that grow with monitoring objectives.
